Description

Although its vision of reality can easily be questioned, something intrinsically appealing underlies myth at its best. However fanciful and beyond literal belief the story, a deep truth emerges that arouses a shared sense of recognition. We may attribute that awareness in part to religious expression, in part to an abiding subconscious desire, and even in part to something I earlier helped to identify as proto-observation or a fledgling capacity for verifying. (1) But perhaps an even more basic explanation remains to be explored. Poignant examples of what I mean have emerged from the Americas with the growing acceptance of Native cultures. What distinguishes their mythic legacy from Europe's is a proximity that allows close examination, even if the activity of performing and applying the myths is in decline. One can still attend ceremonies that reiterate mythic episodes, talk with elders who recite them, and reflect on how the old narratives continue to be widely known and applied.
